In this audio recording, interior designer and Parsons School of Design alumnus James (Jamie) Drake is interviewed by Joel Towers, executive dean of Parsons, and Wendy Scheir, director of the New School Archives and Special Collections. Drake discusses his upbringing in Connecticut and education at Choate-Rosemary Hall, as well as his application process to design school. He describes in detail his Foundation Year at Parsons, his immersion in 1970s New York City nightlife, the founding of his interior design firm at twenty-one years old, and his eventual success and widespread recognition as a designer. Drakes elaborates on his relationships with a number of fellow Parsons alumni and faculty, as well as the impact of the AIDS epidemic on the design community.
