Dreaming of Athanor is a graphic novel that combines both traditional media and digital art making techniques with the intent of subverting both the conventions of comic books and the fantasy genre. The graphic novel tells the story of a frustrated young man named Porter Yeats. Porter discovers that he can escape into the alternate world of Athanor where he has the opportunity to pursue all of the ambitions that have eluded him in his real life. As the barrier between Manhattan and Athanor begins to dissolve, Porter slowly loses his grip on reality.
Due to the advancement of technology, it is now easier than ever to lose oneself in fantasy. Immersive media such as video gaming and 3D film have become mainstream cultural experiences. Dreaming of Athanor presents a scenario that explores the consequences and philosophical dilemmas of total immersion in an alternate reality. Porter’s experience of detachment is meant to explore the nature of escapism in our culture and to challenge people to reassess the way in which they use simulated realities large and small as a means of escape.
