Description
This audio recording is of one of a series of sessions held at The New School, entitled: "American Cities: Law, Survival and the Administration of Justice." Moderator attorney Martin Gallent introduces the subject of the discussion by reading a statement on the Attica prison riot calling for court reform, poses the question of whether changes in society must necessitate a large-scale change in the court system, and introduces the first speaker, critic and author Nat Hentoff, who speaks at 6:46. Hentoff calls for greater public awareness of social issues through press coverage of prisons, the court system, and environmental concerns, and mentions the lawsuit against New York City's Bureau of Special Services over secret surveillance.
