This audio recording is of the first part of the first of a series of lectures on Judaism and society held at the New School. Samuel Blumenfield briefly introduces the subject of the lecture series and the evening's lecturer, Maurice Samuel, who speaks at 3:10. Samuel discusses his concept of "the Jewish phenomenon," the history and meaning of the Jewish identity, and the different types of Jewish identity. Blumenfield invites questions from the audience at 40:30, the topics of which include: intermarriage between Jews and Gentiles, the definition of the Jewish identity, the role of antisemitism, the situation of Jews in the Soviet Union, the assimilation of Jews in society, the Israeli debate over the legal definition of the Jewish identity, the relationship between Israel and the diaspora, the New Left, and Yiddish culture.
