Description

This lecture was held in honor of former dean of the Graduate Faculty, Gerhard Colm. The featured speaker, economist Walter H. Heller, delivered a paper called "Economics of the Race Problem." Responses were offered by a panel of three other economists: Robert Browne, Sidney Sonenblum, and Samuel Bowles. Dr. H. Christian Sonne moderated the event. The recording begins with Graduate Faculty Chair Joseph Greenbaum welcoming the audience. A student from the Graduate Faculty then speaks, giving a statement denouncing Heller for his role in the administrations of Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Dr. Sonne then introduces the lecture series, speaking about Gerhard Colm. This is followed by Heller's lecture, which concludes about one hour into the recording. Robert Browne speaks next, followed by Graduate Faculty student Bob Cohen, who reads a statement authored by the Black Panther organization. Cohen's reading is disrupted towards the end, with some in the audience asking for him to stop talking, and others calling on him to proceed. Sonenblum's lecture concludes the first part of the recording. The second recording begins with Bowles's lecture and concludes with Heller responding to the panelists.
