Elizabeth Dickey opens the Vera List Center-sponsored Considering Joseph Beuys conference and introduces the keynote speaker, Thomas M. Messer. Messer speaks on his memory of Joseph Beuys and the impact of his work. 

A different recording begins at 37:00, of traffic noise. 

At 39:58, another recording begins. Sondra Farganis introduces the first panel, on the topic of "Actions and Environments." The panel consists of Jan Hoet, Mario Kramer and Armin Zweite. Jan Hoet speaks first (continuing on to side B), on his memory of Beuys, the importance of location in Beuys's art, and Beuys's understanding of the social role of art. Hoet then speaks on Beuys's installation Wirtschaftswerte (Economic Values). At 37:15 on side B, Mario Kramer begins to speak, on Beuys's 1969 Frankfurt action Iphigenie/Titus Andronicus.
