Ravitch introduces poet Stanley Kunitz who speaks at 8:50, discussing his impression of Russia and Russian poetry, and especially the legacy of Yevtushenko. At 20:21, Kunitz recites "Hand-rolled Cigarettes" and other poetry by Yevtushenko. At 24:56, Kunitz introduces author John Updike, who recites "Smog." At 33:26, Kunitz introduces poet Muriel Rukeyser who recites "Colors." At 37:47, Kunitz introduces author John Cheever, who recounts a brief anecdote about Yevtushenko. At 41:01, Kunitz introduces poet Allen Ginsberg, who reads "On the Question of Freedom." At 47:07, Ravitch introduces Chairman of The New School's Board of Overseers Orin Lehman to present the honorary doctorate, and Yevtushenko gives his acceptance speech at 49:25, which he delivers in Russian with the assistance of an English translator. At 1:18:55, Ravitch concludes the event and introduces Ruth Ellington, who reads a brief message from her brother, composer and pianist Duke Ellington, to Yevtushenko.
