This audio recording is of a reception inaugurating the Institute for Retired Professionals at The New School. The recording begins with an unidentified speaker introducing Trustee Robert MacIver, who reads a welcome statement from the president of The New School, and a telegram from New York City Mayor Robert F. Wagner, Jr. MacIver introduces Dean William Birenbaum, who then introduces U.S. Senator (New York) Jacob Javits at 9:48 as an impromptu guest. Senator Javits makes congratulatory remarks to the Institute and The New School at 10:21. At 14:20, Dean Birenbaum presents the inaugural class of the Institute and makes remarks on the founding of the Institute. At 20:09, MacIver introduces United Federation of Teachers President Charles Cogen, who makes remarks starting at 21:22. MacIver introduces retired teacher Hyman Hirsch at 25:16 who makes remarks on his efforts to initiate the Institute at 26:25. At 30:25, MacIver introduces retired teacher Jacob Theobald, who speaks at 31:48. At 36:44, MacIver introduces Special Assistant for Aging to the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Donald P. Kent, who makes remarks at 38:15 on the importance of education and the meaningful participation of the growing retired population. At 51:42, MacIver concludes the event.
