Part 2: Peter Eisenman continues: Is scale an architectural problem? Can I make an architecture that is not scale specific? Eisenman discusses this difficulty, and several other topics, with Giuseppe Zambonini and New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) students. Interpretation of the work. Thingness. Tasting words (poetry). States that his architecture is neither about pleasure nor anxiety. Believes that architects/designers are not servants – break out of that mold. Discusses his ‘non-professional’ career. “If you want to do good, be a social worker. Be in architecture/design for ego, hedonism. My interests: tastes, senses, smells.” Claims that those who survived (Holocaust) looked after themselves first. We’ve seen the results of non-hedonistic society (it is grotesque). Reason led to the atom bomb. Giving a client what she wants: “fireplaces are fantastic but I’m not building houses.” Contradiction in the work exists for a reason. Architect is not a midwife. Eisenman is anti-myth. Discusses his Jungian analysis: problems of the unconscious and his work. His houses are symbolic of the collective unconscious. House VI (Frank Residence). Prefers to photograph his houses in neutral light (no sunlight). Architecture is line; the form is always first (not color).
